Detroit Writes Detroit (DWD) was created in 2012 through Teach For America: Detroit. A collaborative idea between Chen-Chen Jiang and Sydney Tanner, DWD was started in order to give voice to students of all ages going to school in Detroit. In 2012, we received over 600 submissions from K-12 students responding to the prompts:
• "I am proud of Detroit for..."
• "I wish that Detroit..."
• "If I could change one thing about Detroit, I would..."
After difficult deliberation, the selection committee narrowed down the submissions to the 120 that you see in the publication.
Upon publication, Teach For America: Detroit sponsored a release party for the student authors, their families, and their teachers. Hundreds of people and the local news came out to celebrate, and those are the pictures you see here.
In 2013-2014, we received almost 900 submissions and published approximately 200 children's work.
The submission window for 2015 is coming to a close, so be sure to get your submissions in as soon as possible.
